This morning I am somewhere between things. I’m between giving thanks and Yule gifting. I’m between the dark of night and the light of day, sitting in the pre-dawn gloom. I’m relaxing in a strange place somewhere between calm and pain, not quite in a great mood, not quite cross from being uncomfortable. The pain is what it is – it, too, is somewhere in between – between ‘as bad as it’s ever been’ and ‘really not so bad’. The morning is quiet, and there is nothing to move me from being between things to any extreme – and I am comfortable with that.

I am up early. Without the inflexible requirement to be up at a point early enough to prepare for a specific work schedule, I find I am waking just a bit later. 6 am isn’t exactly ‘sleeping in’, but it feels more relaxed than feeling my eyelids snap open sometime between 4 am and 4:55 am for an alarm that is set to go off at 5 am.  I still set my alarm – for 7 am. It has yet to actually go off. I wake at 6 am. It feels like sleeping in. I am content with feeling like I slept in and waking at 6 am. There is some quiet morning to time to explore my thoughts, to exist in silence, to tread lightly where the angst-y bits might find foothold, to meditate, to chill… to be.

Strange handful of days since I left the workforce. Some snow. Some fog. Some rain. Some twinkling holiday lights – more of that than much of anything else, happily, and the neighborhood is alight with holiday splendor. Time at home with family has been relaxed, gentle, easy… so little turmoil, so little of the everyday push-pull of grown people all ‘working on their shit’ and finding their way in their personal darkness. It’s chill and good and filled with the qualities that define ‘family’ and ‘love’ in the best ways. Happy Holidays, indeed.

Some snow.

Snow, gone. Fog follows.

I haven’t had a ‘Christmas vacation’ for years. I had reached a point, years ago, where ‘the win’ as a professional was to work partial days, or  perhaps a handful of work-from-home days, through the holidays rather than take real time off… I short-changed myself there. I didn’t understand ‘what really matters’ (at least to me). So. I am home for the holidays. It’s lovely.

Taking time to savor holiday memories.

Taking time to savor holiday memories.

I often find myself sifting through scraps of holiday memories of childhood with great delight and wonder.  My parents made some major holiday magic over the years, and every year I find myself astonished by the feats of Yule merriment and celebration they managed on such limited resources.  I enjoy celebrating the winter holidays, myself, and over the years I have also learned to make some holiday magic. This year, it is wonderful to also really relax, take a few deep breaths, and simply enjoy the days.

Today is a good day to be merry, and a good day to love. Today is a good day to be joyful. Today I will share smiles and words of encouragement. Today I will appreciate what I have. Today I will embrace contentment and sufficiency. Today I will change the world. 😀

The winter holiday season is a big deal for me.

This morning I am surfing the universe of retail luxuries in search of gift ideas that will be memorable, exciting, appreciated, worthy, nurturing, and result in wide eyes and delighted exclamations on a certain upcoming winter morning. The shopping is part of my piece of the fun, and there’s no particular stress in it for me; giving from a place of love to someone who receives with love as well is a marvelous experience whether it is something practical, or something utterly unnecessary.

Expensive isn’t a requirement; I’m not trying to impress anyone, I’m just saying “I love you” with a gift. Relevant is nice; I like gifts to meet a need, or fulfill a passion, or show some specific sort of affection or appreciation. I like a gift to say “I see you, and I enjoy this quality about who you are.” The shopping is an exciting way to explore my understanding of someone I care about, as well as the shared experience we have of who we are together, as it brings my focus to first one, then another particular detail.

Books, jewelry, toys, games, clothes, event tickets, collectibles, hobby related bits and pieces, lifestyle upgrades, something fun, something serious, something that smells good, something that feels good, something colorful, something rare, something out of the everyday experience… the choices are vast. I still make a wish list of my own, every year, and in my head I start it off with ‘Dear Santa…’, even though I’m now ‘far too grown up’ for that. lol. I hope I never lose my sense of wonder and child-like delight with gifting traditions.

So here I sit considering gifts on a winter morning… and thinking about childhood letters to Santa Claus. Maybe I’m not so grown up, after all? 😀

Dear Santa… I’ve been pretty good this year. Better than ever, I promise. Please give everyone in the whole wide world something to smile about this year. If you have time and resources left over from that, I’ve got a list…but I’ll be just as happy to see the smiles of people I love when they open their gifts from me, as getting anything bigger than that. It’s been a busy year, and I already have a lot of stuff. 🙂  If you’re really sure you want to put more presents under the tree, though, I understand.  My list has lots of stuff on it, and it’s all awesome: paperweights, tea cups, books, earrings, nail polish, yoga gear… just in case you need help choosing something, but you know I just love presents, anyway, so whatever you decide on will be wonderful. I’ll be sure to save some of your favorite cookies for you!  😀

It’s been 335 days since I began this blog, this journey, this cycle of change and growth. 335 days.  A bit less than 47 weeks. 8040 hours, give or take. More than 482,000 minutes. Time measured, time spent, some of it wasted, all of it precious, and limited; I am living a more deliberate, mindful life than I had been living. I continue to practice new skills, continue to refine new practices that I value, and that seem to enhance my every day experience. There are a lot of small changes in the way I experience my life, the qualities I bring to my relationships, the value I place on the experiences of others, their challenges, the lessons they offer me when our paths cross along the way.

Now there is time to consider it all as the end of the year approaches.

It has long been my practice to take time on New Year’s day to consider the year past, and the year unfolding ahead of me. An hour or two, at least, to really put some attention on whether I achieved my goals, where I’m headed, what I can improve, what my challenges are. Funny, I’ve been doing that since I was about 14… it wasn’t as helpful a practice as it could have been, because for so many years I let my thinking self control the agenda, the tone, and the outcome, and left no room for my observing self to bring stillness, calm, and insight. Light without illumination, in a manner of speaking. This year I have come so far, and much of the journey on a very different path than any before. I’m eager to sit down with myself this New Year’s Day, look 2014 in the eye and say “Let’s do this thing!”

I slept badly last night. I didn’t, however, experience the stress of ‘how will I get enough rest to…’, which often complicates the bad sleep picture by throwing additional anxiety and something rather like ‘performance pressure’ into the mix. It was a pleasant relief to realize that just getting up and doing something other than ‘trying to sleep’ would be inconsequential to the day that followed.  I feel groggy and fatigued, predictably enough, but the morning is pleasant and comfortable in spite of that.  I’m an analyst by trade, which had tended to foster a rather simplistic notion that somehow ‘data fixes everything’ – if only there is enough of it. It hasn’t proven to be the case in practice. I spent years gathering sleep related data on my own experience: hours of sleep, hours disturbed, the nature of sleep disturbances, when they occurred by type, where my hormones were, my diet, exercise, medication, even details about the weather or environmental conditions, all sorts of stuff. I carefully analyzed the data for trends, looked for patterns, even found some; none of it mattered, because none of it had the power to affect the outcome in my experience. I struggled with missing pieces, undeveloped skills, correlations I wasn’t aware of, didn’t recognize, or didn’t understand were relevant. In my experience of my own life, mindfulness beats analysis for enacting change and improving my experience, easily. It’s not even close.  2013 has been the year that mindfulness became something, for me, and I, in turn, am becoming someone I enjoy being – sleepless nights and all. 😀

This morning seems a nice one to take a moment for gratitude, and a smile. The path isn’t always easy, and sometimes I still feel like I’m walking in the dark, banging knees, shins, and heart on unseen obstacles, but I no longer fight the needful journey.

Where this really started, back in 2010, and a moment of gratitude for the love of the man who shared it with me, then, and remains with me, still.

Like any other, this day begins with a sunrise. Most are quite lovely, when I take time to notice them. Has anyone ever paused to notice the sunrise and said ‘damn, that’s just not attractive at all!’? I somehow doubt it very much. Sunrises, as things go, are pretty reliably lovely. I find myself wondering if that is in any part due to the simple relief and gratitude of waking up for one more day of living?

One of many sunrises.

One of many sunrises.

I slept poorly, and I am unsurprised; a significant change in my routine often disrupts both my sleep and my emotional balance, whether the change itself is a positive or negative thing. I am learning to refrain from defining a given change, or experience, as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Someone else has an excellent parable about that.  I like parables in general, and along with metaphors, and allegories, find them both illuminating and efficient at communicating subtleties in ideas.  There are some good ones here.  I sometimes consider their value as ‘children’s stories’ over the more favored (and severely idealistic) ‘fairy tales’ with reliable happy endings, where everyone gets to be a princess. Would I be different than I am if my childhood had been filled with wise parables that taught perspective, compassion, and consideration, rather than filled with fairy tales where the princess always wins – even if she didn’t really do much to earn it?

I’m not being fair to fairy tales, though, or to the volumes of reading I did as a child. I read all the fairy books…and mythology, and legendary tales of mystery and fantastical wonder, anything I could find in a language I could read, actually.  I still somehow missed some very important messaging somewhere along the way, or failed to carry it forward in life with me.  Like so many people I ended up thinking seeking ‘my fortune’ and seeking ‘happily ever after’ were goals worthy of my time and attention, without understanding that these things are of so much less value than the foundation stones required to support them: contentment, compassion, consideration, gratitude, self-acceptance, and finding that inner stillness with which to contemplate and enjoy the wonders of life.

I’ve somehow gone off on a tangent. I’m okay with that, this morning. It is a lovely morning, and soon enough I will be in mindful service to home and hearth, finding new balance in a new routine.

This morning looks like a good day to avoid assumptions, to be compassionate and patient with others – and myself, to cherish the warmth of life, love, and family. Today is a good day not to take other people’s stress as my own. Today I will practice new tools, and take care of me. Today I will change the world. 😀

…Nothing to see here.

Well, actually, I’m taking a couple days to get my balance and savor my experience mindfully.  Winter came upon us abruptly, with icy mornings and cold winds. I find comfort in the warmth of holiday baking and mindful service to home and hearth. For now, I am taking time for me, investing in personal growth and putting the best of my time and attention where I need it most.

There is much to learn from this (any?) experience.  I am exploring new things about myself as I learn, and change over time.  I am embracing a clearer understanding of my self, and my values, and what my life means to me – the whole thing, vast, and in places rather bleak; where I begin, where I end, what is about me, what isn’t. I have, for now, time enough available to me to turn the machinery of my analytical mind, and the power of my experience to bring insight to my own life, my own ‘then’ and ‘now’ and tend to the deepest needs of my heart.  What a rare and precious gift. What an exquisite opportunity.

So…my last day at work had been planned for the 11th. Comfortably and easily became the 4th, a day I was again struggling to manage everyday pain in an everyday circumstance, unsuccessfully. It was good to find myself at home, safe, warm, and comfortable, in the company of family and friends preparing for the holidays, sooner than planned.

I’m still working on ‘getting my balance’, and interestingly pursuing that goal through home crafts as the holidays near. I’m finding it lovely to practice mindful baking; the cookies are amazing. I also find it incredibly difficult to create the cognitive ‘space’ I need to write. I’ll figure it out, I’m sure. (I find myself contemplating what I might find through a silent retreat…)

Compassion for myself, and patience, seems easier than I recall it being. It’s a quiet evening, and the ups and downs and everyday challenges of dealing with me are more nuisance than crisis. It’s a good evening to change the world…or put up lights. 🙂

Changing the world - with twinkly lights. :-D
