Yesterday was a busy work day and I ended the day cognitively fatigued and in a great deal of pain. I don’t know that those are connected by any causal relationship, but the correlation found me arriving home drained and lacking motivation to take on the tasks I’d eagerly set for myself from the energetic vantage point of morning. I made choices, committed to necessary tasks, re-planned the things I just wasn’t up to, and let go of the disappointment – because truly, I’d be the only person being disappointed by the changes I was making, and making them to support me, myself, through my own decision-making, isn’t actually disappointing.

As tired as I was, I still arrived home after grocery shopping with some remnant of eagerness; my traveling partner had stopped by with a sweet gift during the day and I was excited about it. Excited…and fatigued….and in pain; this is not a good combination for approaching a new practice, new toy, new technology – or really, anything new and exciting that could be quite fun under other circumstances. My thinking wasn’t clear, and I was quickly frustrated nearly to tears. It tends to take some of the fun out of something new to be frustrated by it, at least for me. I managed to pull myself back from the brink of some nasty pointless tantrum (practices do have results), and phoned my traveling partner calmly. The difficulty was quickly sorted out. All this practicing of good self-care practices pays off again; resolving the small challenge also entirely resolved the emotional challenge. No lingering frustration waiting to blow me off course. 🙂

The day ended well and quietly. I finished the evening taking care of me; clearly I was fatigued and in need of some consideration. I went through my self-care basics one after another: a simple healthy meal, some yoga, a hot shower, meditation, and a little light reading and an early night. Small details, good self-care choices, and putting me on my own agenda make a big difference. I woke this morning with some effort, from a sound sleep, to the beeping of the alarm – groggy but feeling rested (heavier use of medication definitely affects how easily I am able to wake up). Pain relieved. Mood managed. Fatigue put to rest. I found myself lingering in the shower this morning, smiling and content, enjoying the sensuous pleasure of warm water on skin. My coffee is good. Yoga felt relaxed and natural. In all, a very nice morning – and if I didn’t have a lifetime of experience reminding me that difficult days lead to rough nights leading to crappy mornings, I probably wouldn’t notice one gentle relaxed morning, content over my coffee. I know how much practice I have put into the quality of the life I live. I savor these mornings, these moments; they are not guaranteed to me, even now. Incremental change over time is a thing. I find it much easier to enjoy progress when I take time to reflect on it, and enjoy the outcome without reservations. Refusing to celebrate or acknowledge the power my own intentions, will, and actions have had to improve my experience is just one more form of self-neglect and self-punishment waiting to be selected. I think I will choose differently, and show myself some appreciation and respect this morning; I’ve worked hard to get here. (That there is further to go is not relevant to the success of this moment right now.)  🙂

There’s no smugness here. No ‘winner’; it’s not a competition. There is no vanquished Bad Guy – I am my own Bad Guy as often as I am my own Hero. I am so very human, practicing practices, learning from mistakes, and celebrating small successes – this morning, I am grateful to be celebrating a small success over my morning coffee. It’s not fancy as moments go, it is, however, enough.

Today is a very good day for emotional self-sufficiency. Today is a very good day to appreciate my efforts, and enjoy a moment of success. Today is a good day to look ahead with a smile; the journey is the destination. Today is a good day to practice The Art of Being, and use the Big 5* generously out in the world.

Tonight started in a most promising way. I had a task in mind; hooking up the stereo. Simple stuff, but it hits a nerve with my post traumatic stress and I felt considerable anxiety about the undertaking, and a dreadful lack of confidence about it. Here’s the thing, though; I know how to do hook up my stereo, and the fear and stress are an illusion left over from a lifetime ago. So, I got home, and got started. Didn’t get it quite finished – it turned out the wee allen wrench for tightening the set screw on the back of the speakers had gone missing. It’s a small thing – I’ll replace it and finish connecting the speakers and be done with it…

…I’m not wired for frustration. Rationally, I knew it wasn’t a big deal – I’ve been contentedly listening to music on my laptop for days. The disappointment and frustration collided at the end of a busy workday. I wasn’t up to the challenge and wept for some time, helpless, immobilized, overwhelmed. It seems inexplicable now, on the other side of it. I had a shower, meditated, did some yoga, had a bite to eat… I’m fine. Frustrated, but even that has dissipated.  You know what hasn’t changed? The ferocious itching of bites that I suspect now of being spider rather than mosquito. I’ve got several large painful welts that itch so fiercely moment to moment that it’s hard to focus on anything else. The one of my foot was most agonizing walking to and from work. Right now the one on my calf feels worst. My mood may be affected by these bites – I am sensitive enough to bee stings to carry a bee sting kit all spring and summer, anywhere I go.

Practicing good practices doesn’t prevent bug bites (well, there are probably some excellent insect control practices…) – and I don’t know how or how much these bites may be affecting me. (When my traveling partner got a nasty spider bite sometime last year it definitely changed his outlook on the world, and he was much more irritable, generally.) I’m suffering enough with these bites – and they are numerous – that I withdrew an offer to hang out with my traveling partner sometime over the weekend. It doesn’t make sense to allow even one previous minute to be tainted with predictable irritability or suffering when we can save it for another day, and enjoy each other. It was a difficult choice to make – but hanging out Wednesday went sideways pretty easily, and I wouldn’t be surprised to confirm these bites had something to do with my emotional dis-regulation. Another time.

We are creatures of both emotion and reason, of both light and darkness.

Tonight, between the frustration with the stereo, and the itching of the bites, and challenges getting my routines down (I think I missed on my hormones…not sure, though, I can’t recall taking them, but I also don’t recall not taking them…) (Did I mention the fucking itching? lol ) I finally just broke.  So sure, I cried some frustrated tears. I do that. I suck at frustration, even now, although I am hopeful that experiences like this will help me improve the way I handle frustration the next time. No humans were harmed in the making of this experience – even me. Really. Frustrating, sure, but even that passed, leaving behind only me. Pretty content, and entirely okay. Yes, it was a choice, and no that doesn’t make it less valued, or less genuine. It isn’t forced, it’s just that there are verbs involved. 🙂

At 2, a very different perspective.

I’m tired. Sleepy, fatigued, and not feeling my best, without actually feeling ill. It’s a lovely evening to meditate – the process of moving has broken so many routines. It’s time to rebuild good habits, practice good practices with consistency and discipline – it’s time to take the very best care of this fragile vessel.

I slept badly last night. My sleep was interrupted, restless, and featured bad dreams on old themes with new characters. I felt over-heated much of the night, which I noticed most often immediately before taking some action that subsequently found me feeling too cold. It was an uncomfortable sort of night. I could spend many hours and words looking for ‘why’; I don’t find that doing so is helpful, nor does it result in fewer such nights. I let it go and move on, feeling generally in good spirits this morning in spite of the difficult night.

I didn’t let the lack of good sleep frustrate me. It got me thinking, this morning, about frustration in general. Frustration is my kryptonite, emotionally. Something about my messed up wiring, and broken bits, allows even small moments of frustration to become a very big, very ugly, emotional mess in a small amount of time. Lately, I’ve been finding my way to using some common moments of frustration as simple practices for dealing more appropriately and comfortably with frustration itself. The value in these small practices has been almost immediate, but the value in any practice is the practicing, itself, and I still need quite a lot of it before I even approach a place in life where I may be able to say “I handle frustration well”. That’s the goal, though, ultimately.

It is no easy feat for me to choose to make use of some unpleasant moment or circumstance to willfully practice some better practice than my reactive impulse in the moment might direct me towards without any practice at all. Frustration is a free will killer. Frustration dissolves emotional resilience and mindfulness almost instantly, for me. Frustration is an emotion to which I reliably still react, rather than responding with mindfulness, will, consideration and good self-care.  Practicing useful practices has resulted in so many day-to-day improvements in my experience that it has been a source of some frustration that I hadn’t yet built a practice specific to mastering how I manage frustration, itself. Finding one or two in my everyday experience – built around the most common sources of frustration in my own life (like logging into apps using complicated passwords that easily fail, or the occasional odd screen-freeze on my device) – is allowing me to practice better behaviors in response to frustrating moments. The hope is that doing so with small things, harmless things, common things will insulate me from major freak outs and emotional disasters when bigger things frustrate me; practice may not make ‘perfect’, but it sure tends to solidify habits, and change specific reactions.

Celebrating progress, even small wins, has big value. Even something as small on the victory scale as a change in thinking, or a good idea, is worth a moment of my appreciation. This morning, I’m taking time to appreciate new practices that address a very old issue, for me, and feeling positive and supported. This, too, is a practice; the practice of celebrating small victories, and incremental progress over time, is a practice that builds more positive implicit memory, as well as providing myself with emotional support from within – which builds emotional self-sufficiency, and keeps me on the path of reaching that place where my close relationships with others are reliably chosen based on desire, and built on positive emotional values, rather than investing in habitual, self-defeating, or co-dependent behaviors, that over time become damaging.

Meeting most of my emotional needs, myself, isn’t an unreasonable goal, and getting there lifts the burden from loved ones to ‘make me happy’ – or ‘make me’ anything at all. I get to ‘make me’ in my own image. Powerful. I am eager to take that project to a new level by moving into creative live/work space and investing more of my time in me. The wait involved in ideal readiness – and an available unit – is another practice in managing frustration on a larger scale; my impatience lurks in the background, waiting for a moment to jump out and undermine my good time now. Mindfulness practices are one way to keep my Observer firmly in the driver’s seat for much of the journey. Another beneficial practice is to embrace the joy I find in planning the move; making a point of being very realistic, practical, and frugal builds useful skills for good self-care, and I feel engaged in imminent change in a positive way.  I’m still very much a beginner, practicing practices. I am still at risk of attacking myself, my will, my resolve, and my intention, from within on any point of vulnerability my demons can grab onto; it makes for some uncomfortable nights, but I am content to show myself some compassion, some acceptance, and some love, and move on from the difficult moments to continue the practicing of good practices. 🙂
