I woke up abruptly this morning, lights on at full brightness. I’ve felt like I’m “running behind” ever since, though it is an entirely ordinary day in most regards. Well, not really, it’s a birthday (Happy Birthday shout out to the Anxious Adventurer!). I’ve some things to do related to that event, later, and a plan to cram the full measure of my work day into the next 4 hours, and cut the work day short. I sip my (terrible) (iced) coffee and consider the day, and this moment right here. Things seem pretty okay, although I’ve got my headache riding shotgun this morning, and my arthritis has reduced my mobility considerably (I’m very stiff this morning), and I’ve got a weird pain in my left side, like a cramp or something, higher up than my kidneys, lower down than my heart, somewhere just below-not-quite-inside my ribcage. It’s vexing me. It doesn’t come and go with my heart beat, but it’s also not steady. A dull ache that waxes and wanes in a sort of arbitrary way.

…I probably talk about pain too much…

I breathe, exhale, and relax. I sip my coffee and think my thoughts.

A colorful distraction

A moment of whimsy distracts me from my bullshit. There are bags of colorful gumballs on the desk adjacent to mine (which is otherwise bare). I laughed with delight when I first walked in and saw them, and they catch my eye again, now. The colors delight me. I enjoy color. I once dressed all in black, and had a lot of “stuff” that was also black, but it’s generally been as a backdrop to things that are quite colorful as contrast. (I learned late in life how much more powerfully a neutral gray background can highlight bold colors – maybe there’s a metaphor in there somewhere?) I don’t wear much black these days. Some, not a lot. I’m not all that gloomy or negative about life, generally, nor am I as serious as I sometimes may seem. I paint in colors. I decorate in colors. I enjoy colorful light. I don’t know what I’m trying to communicate here – certainly I have no beef with people who choose to wrap themselves in black. The colors we choose say things about who we are, but it’s not for me to say what things they say. You do you. Please. Definitely be who you are – the best of who you are. No one else can do that as well as you can.

I think about my office, which was previously also my studio. I’ve decorated it for my comfort. It’s a place I can retreat to to meditate, to read, to work, or just to chill in a moment of solitude. It is a colorful space, comfy and cozy, and too small for everything in it, which seems to suit me just fine. I don’t like clutter, though, actually, and I find that yielding to clutter creates chaos in my thinking and my experience of life, generally, so I like to avoid that if I can. My Traveling Partner knows this about me, and when recently cleaning my computer for me, he noticed that my desk had become a bit messy. Understanding how much this vexes me, and how little time for tidying up I’ve had lately (and how little energy), he suggested adding a couple little drawers under my desk.

What love looks like.

He 3D printed the little drawers for me in colors that delight me and fit the color scheme in my office (yes, I think pastel rainbow colors and lavender, green, and pink are entirely acceptable office colors LOL). I sat down to a new opportunity to create order from chaos, and once again my desk is quite tidy and free of messiness or disorder. It’s lovely. I worked efficiently all day, smiling and grateful to be so loved.

Today I am in the office, and honestly it is a disappointingly bland space. Earth tones, white, black trim, very “corporate”, very neutral, wholly uninteresting – some days I find it hard to work here. The bags of gumballs made me smile. I don’t know why they are here, placed where they are. This space, and this day, needed some measure of whimsy. I feel merry in spite of my pain. It’s a good start to the day.

I sip my (dreadful) coffee and think about the path I’m on. This path that I’ve been on now for some 15 years, I suppose. This path I’ve chosen to walk, that leads me… where? When I “get there”, will I know it? When I get there, where will I be? “The journey is the destination.” I say it a lot, as a reminder that my choices, words, and actions right now matter every bit as much as whatever awaits me out there in the future, further along the path. I’m not perfect – but perfect isn’t the goal. I only want to be the most me, the best version of the woman I most want to be, that I possibly can be – knowing what I know now, and using the full measure of my abilities as they are, and working each day to become just a little more of who I could be. Some days it doesn’t feel like much of a goal – other days I’ve no idea why I set the bar so high. lol Depends on where I am in the moment, I suppose.

Who are you at your best? Who do you most want to be? How often do you ask yourself these questions and take action on your answers? Are you walking your path with your eyes open? When your birthday comes around, do you take an honest look in the mirror and reflect on who you have become, and whether this is who you most want to be?

Dawn comes. The sky is dull and gray this morning, and I’m grateful that I can fill my world with color, anyway. Color that I choose. Color that fills me with joy. Color that reflects agency and whimsy and lessons learned over time. There are so many choices in life’s Strange Diner. So many lessons learned over time. I choose my path, and I walk it.

The clock is ticking. What will you choose, next? It’s time to begin again.

The car was already packed when I woke up on Thursday morning. I had planned a new route, unnecessarily long, detouring through autumn forest and along less-traveled state highways to reach the coastal highway (Hwy 101) at a different point, to enjoy a drive I don’t recall ever taking. It more or less doubled the length of the drive, but I was specifically not in any hurry, and I knew my “early check-in” wasn’t going to be available that early, anyway. I took my walk close to home, on a familiar trail, well-maintained, well-traveled, level, familiar and easy. It was a good plan. I hit the road heading to the coast comfortably after daybreak, to enjoy the fall colors.

It was a lovely morning for a drive. Along the way I thought about my Granny, and the many drives we took together, and the detours and side trips she loved so much. I saw so many things and enjoyed so many adventures with my Granny. She raised me through my tumultuous high school years, and I realize now that she surely knew about my brain injury, though she didn’t discuss it with me explicitly. She gave me the love and the safe environment I needed, to learn and grow and – recover. Was she a perfect person? No, of course not. Taking my own Mother and my aunts at their word, she was maybe not even a very good mother to her own daughters, at all. She was raising 4 (and later more) kids, and often as a single mother, in an era when women were still very much viewed as needing to be attached to some man or another. She was strong – to the point of ferocity – and she could be unyielding. I never doubted that she loved me dearly though, and I value her love and guidance to this day.

I pass by the remnants of an old fort. It’s the sort of place she would have stopped. She’d drive an hour on a Sunday morning just to enjoy “the best cinnamon buns in the USA!” in a town rather farther away than most folks would drive for a cinnamon bun, and she’d make a 4 hour detour on a long drive just to see an old schoolhouse. lol She took me to see historic sights all over, everywhere she lived. She would dig in and do more research, and share what she learned, sometimes sneaking a cutting of a rose bush growing there, to plant at her house when we returned. I drove thinking about the drives we shared over the years that I lived with her. So many miles. So many sights. So much wisdom and perspective and shared conversation. Looking back, I know I must have been fucking insufferable. lol Teenagers often are. It’s a feature, not a bug, and trying out new perspectives is one of the ways we become who we will be. She was so patient with me. So willing to talk – and to listen. I pay attention to the sights along my drive, and it becomes a way to honor her memory.

A stop along the way. I feel like I’ve been here before…

I stop at a wayside with a view of the ocean. I take a couple pictures and just stand there enjoying the view, before reading all the signs. It’s not that I had any particular use for the information, I stopped for the view and to stretch my legs. I found some of the information interesting, like the map showing all the nearby other sights and way points, and places to camp. I smile to myself; I think my Granny would have liked the signage. I chuckled to myself as I got back on the road. No traffic – my timing was excellent and the weather was lovely.

I drove on thinking about the contrast in my relationship with my Granny, and my Mother (her daughter, and eldest child). My Mother always seemed, to me, to be intensely practical, but it was finding her college binder of her poetry, written in ink in that familiar handwriting, that inspired me to write long before my Granny’s writing of children’s stories (that never were published) would later inspire me to continue writing. My Mother’s poetry was poignant and romantic, moody and emotional – like the poetry of young women often is. Her poetry revealed a stranger to me. When she caught me reading it, the moment was awkward and filled with quiet tension. She took the notebook from my hand. I never found it again, though I searched the bookcases and the drawers of the secretary for it over and over again.

I don’t think I ever truly understood my Mother, and we were never very close (as I understand closeness, myself). She seemed “cold” to me in my adolescence. Reserved and private, and reluctant to share confidences when I was an adult. We never really “clicked” – or perhaps we were too much alike for her to feel entirely comfortable with me? I never knew. We were in touch on and off throughout my life and to the end of hers, though it was clear from conversations with my sister that my Mother didn’t speak of it. There were even years when she told strangers and new acquaintances that she had “two children” instead of three. I never asked why. She never mentioned it to me. My Mother was, in many ways, a closed book with a fascinating cover. I regret that we weren’t closer, but I learned from her that such things can’t be forced. I learned a lot from her. I learned from her to believe people when they tell you who they are. I learned from her that “family” is a word. Just a word. I learned from her that there’s real lasting value in learning to count on myself, and that no one can take my education from me – though it may not pay off in the way I may have expected it to.

…I learned from my Mother than choices have consequences.

There was a lot to my Mother, and I never knew her well. She remains quite a mystery to me, though she had quite a lot to do with becoming the woman I eventually did become, and the woman I am today. I drove on, thinking about these two women and the woman I am, myself. I think about their expectations, their encouragement – and my choices.

It was an interesting drive. Time well-spent. I’ve continued to think over the life lessons I learned from these women (and others), as I rest and relax and reflect – and grieve. I feel inspired, but… it’s slippery. The paintings I want most to paint feel “just out of reach”. I play in the colors, and let the memories come and go. I’ve needed this quiet time to reflect and consider and sift through the emotions. It’s been an emotional year, and I honestly wasn’t ready for all of it. I needed some time alone with the woman in the mirror.

Yesterday, sometime in the early afternoon, I found myself stalled with a terrible headache, and had a panick attack on top of that. It was severe and made me feel sick with dread and overwhelmed with pain and emotion and I ended up “doing all the things” to manage it, with limited success. I finally just went to bed, hoping to wake feeling better (which I did). I spent a restless night of strange dreams, listening to the wind and the rain, waking now and then, and returning to sleep. I woke at daybreak, and watched the soggy sunrise, gray and wet and featureless. The day has been a good one, aside from the blustery stormy weather, which I don’t really mind. The views have been pretty spectacular. I’ve taken some good pictures.

Evening has come. I watched the light dwindle and fade away. More rain. More wind. Another night of it. This time no headache, and I’m enjoying that. I listen to the sound of a fire crackling on a hearth – it isn’t “real”, just a video, nonetheless I feel warmed by it, which amuses me. I sit with a cup of tea – finding a couple tea bags of my favorite tucked into my overnight bag, forgotten from my last trip, was a delightful moment. Enjoying it now is pleasantly satisfying and soul nurturing. I write awhile, thinking about these women who loved me and helped me along life’s path at a tender age, and how far I’ve come since then. It’s been a hell of a journey, and it’s not over yet. There’s so much still to see along the way.

Tomorrow I’ll begin again.

I’ve spent the day relaxing in this quiet room, and providing my Traveling Partner with caregiving. It’s detail-oriented personal service work, providing care to this human being I love so deeply. Still, it has been a day with ample time for reflecting on life and love and what I have learned along the way.

Here are 61 lessons from my mortal lifetime thus far:

  4. Self-care matters.
  5. Meditation is an effective practice.
  6. We become what we practice.
  7. We each have the power to define success for ourself.
  8. Setting boundaries is a self-care practice.
  9. Our values are not what we say they are; they are what we live and practice.
  10. Taking the time to do something well is reliably more efficient than having to do it more than once.
  11. Anxiety is a liar.
  12. Chasing happiness does not result in greater happiness.
  13. Lust is mostly a matter of biology.
  14. Savoring life’s small joys and making time for gratitude builds emotional resilience.
  15. Human primates operate “emotion first”.
  16. Our quality of life is more dependent on the quality of our relationships than the size of our paychecks.
  17. Assumptions are not facts.
  18. Expectations are not facts.
  19. Opinions are not facts.
  20. Beliefs are not facts.
  21. The catchiness of a slogan has no bearing on its truth or usefulness.
  22. Very few of life’s stressful moments have lasting impact.
  23. I probably need to drink more water.
  24. “Wealth” is relative.
  25. The person who throws the punch doesn’t get to decide whether it hurt.
  26. We are each having our own experience.
  27. A lot of the crap that bothers us most is shit we totally made up in our own heads that has no actual basis in reality.
  28. Self-reflection can help develop perspective.
  29. Rumination can be really damaging, and tends to limit perspective.
  30. The difference between rumination and self-reflection can be subtle.
  31. Emotional intelligence has real-world value.
  32. Getting enough rest is as important as drinking water, eating healthy food, and exercise.
  33. Solitude can be rich, beautiful, satisfying, and nurturing.
  34. Few people recognize their own confrontational, hostile, angry, or escalated tone of voice.
  35. Forgiving someone is a thing we do for ourself, not for the person being forgiven.
  36. People notice when someone isn’t paying attention.
  37. Distracted driving is potentially lethal.
  38. What we think we understand about human behavior isn’t reliably accurate, and can’t be assumed to apply to all people in every circumstance. It doesn’t.
  39. People are people.
  40. We’re all in this together.
  41. The journey is the destination.
  42. Your lived experience is yours. My lived experience is not yours.
  43. How you behave when you think no one is watching will tell you what your values truly are.
  44. Rationalizing poor behavior doesn’t make the behavior any better.
  45. We feel our own pain the most.
  46. Our ability to understand the world is limited by our perspective.
  47. Being a dick to people is a poor practice with predictably poor outcomes.
  48. Thriving and surviving are two very different experiences.
  49. Reading is an incredibly useful skill, the benefits of which are multiplied by enjoying it.
  50. Art is a way of expressing the things we don’t have words for.
  51. Language functions by agreement.
  52. Carefully defining the terms in a discussion prevents a lot of arguments and misunderstandings.
  53. Apologizing without sincere contrition isn’t really an apology.
  54. Apologizing while making excuses for how the offense is justified, understandable, or must be overlooked isn’t really an apology.
  55. An effective apology is 100% focused on the person hurt and how they were affected, and 0% about how the offender feels about it.
  56. Listening deeply is a powerful relationship building tool which takes time, practice, and effort to develop.
  57. Hijacking a conversation to talk about yourself instead is rude.
  58. Waiting for a turn to talk while someone else is talking is rude.
  59. Interrupting someone while they are speaking is rude
  60. Manners and civility are key to quality of life and cultured society.
  61. Life is worth living.

It’s not science. These are things I’ve learned myself, over a lifetime. I’m not even saying these observations and learnings are “all there is” (what would you add?)… these are just a few things I’ve learned that continue to serve me well.

It’s your journey, up ahead. I’m over here walking my own path. May your path be smooth and the way ahead illuminated.

Every sunrise is a chance to begin again.

I’m sipping my coffee and thinking about my recent meltdown, and the later realization that it may have been connected in some way to the recent clutter-reducing destruction of many years of paper journals. After so many years of working to improve my emotional wellness and heal whatever I can of my PTSD, it took me by surprise to have such a bad episode so recently. I was completely taken by surprise – and frankly, that’s almost comical; intellectually, I know not to just “tick a box” and call myself “well”. Mental illness doesn’t work like that – it’s more a journey taken over time. A lifetime.

When I began talking it over with my therapist, it became pretty clear that the chaos and damage that surfaced in those painful moments sourced with some of my earliest adult trauma in my first marriage, and I know that that had its foundation in the childhood traumas that are older still. I was (and am still) dealing with the lasting effects of family violence. In the here-and-now, where such traumas are not part of my current experience, I was nonetheless “primed” for panic because the daily news is filled with stories of family violence, family killings, and domestic violence related femicides (I do my best to avoid reading those articles, but the headlines are everywhere).

Firstly, let’s just get this out of the way; don’t kill people you say you love. (This seems obvious…?) Don’t raise your hand in violence outside the explicit requirements of actual fucking warfare. Just… don’t. Violence is ugly, unnecessary, and the outcomes are unpleasant and often quite permanent. If you are an American in the United States, our social contract with each other states – in writing – that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” are “inalienable rights”, and this means you are explicitly agreeing that these things are sacrosanct and not to be taken lightly. So… yeah. Don’t fucking kill people. Especially do not kill your fucking family. Jeez… who are we that this has to be said??

So, yeah. Here I am almost 60, and I am still dealing with the traumas inflicted on me as a child, and those inflicted on me as a young adult. We’re talking about horrors of many years ago… more than 30 years ago. Fucking hell. You’d think spending something like 30-40 years in therapy (on and off, and most recently a pretty consistent 10 years or so) would mean… no more chaos and damage. No more panic attacks. No more freak outs. No more tears.

It doesn’t work that way. It’s more like the crumpled paper analogy suggests (used as a lesson for anti-bullying, but quite relevant). The damage is done. The lasting outcomes are… lasting. The lost trust. The peculiar defensiveness. The hyper-vigilance. The thinking errors. Some of it can be corrected and eased over time… with practice. Some of it… maybe it’s always part of who we are as survivors. Scars that tell the tale.

Note: having been hurt doesn’t get us out from under our own obligation to be the best human being we know how to be. Being hurt is not an excuse for inflicting hurts on others. Just saying… adulting is hard.

I’m not sitting here feeling gloomy or tragic. I mean, fuck yes it’s a major bummer, and frustrating as shit… but… there’s hope for further improvement over time. I come back again and again to the tools that work, and to the lessons learned over time. I take a moment to reflect on how much progress has been made, and how much easier things actually are. So many new beginnings. The chaos and damage doesn’t tell the whole story, and living mired in my nightmares is no longer my way. That’s something. My results still vary. I still need practice practicing the practices that shore up my wellness and promote healing. That’s just real. It’s a commitment to healing – and to living well.

The harder part here may be balancing what I know through experience and study with what I achieve through my words and my actions – making the understanding a living experience isn’t an instant win. There are so many verbs involved. Try, fail, try again… repeat. Very human. (Don’t give up, just keep practicing and improve over time.) While I’m not personally to blame for the horrors or violence inflicted on me, I am personally responsible for those that I inflict on others subsequently – whatever the hurts that shaped me.

I sip my coffee enjoying the quiet time to reflect on the powerful impression trauma makes on our entire being, and the way it can shape who we become and color how we see the world around us. Worth a moment or two of self-reflection and I find myself wondering if it is too soon for another trip to the coast to watch the waves pound the beach on a stormy afternoon while thinking about the lasting effect of trauma, and how best to begin again? If not that, well then, it’s another work day, and other beginnings have my attention.

Another day, another new beginning. 🙂 Time to choose my adventure…
