I’m paused on the trail. I arrived just as the park gates opened, put on my boots and got started down the trail moments after daybreak. The trail was still quite dim and I have it to myself, even now. I  set a good pace, and at my planned turnaround point (a riverfront viewpoint) I stopped to catch my breath and write. It’s a cool morning, but not so chilly that my fingers would struggle with my phone. I’m warmed through from the walk.

My night was wakeful and not especially restful after my Traveling Partner woke me up. I don’t remember why he woke me, only that it was difficult to get back to sleep, and my sleep was interrupted with wakeful moments and anxious dreams from then until morning. Less than ideal. He left me a sweet and kind apology note, which I saw when I woke. I’m okay. Not mad or cranky about it,  just not well-rested. Maybe a nap later…?

…There are nutria playing along the riverbank. I watch them awhile…

It’s a gray rainy looking morning. There’s laundry to do. Vacuuming. Salad greens in the garden are looking good, and I consider carefully harvesting enough of the more mature outer leaves for a salad for breakfast after I return home. It’s Sunday…

Today is a “benchmark day”. Time to take my next dose of Ozempic, do my weigh-in, and take a couple pictures of progress-to-date. This is my 4th shot. This is also the first time I’ve ever approached fitness and weight-loss from a perspective of actual eagerness and confidence, since I was  bodybuilding in the 80s. It helps to see the progress, and as with so many things, the progress is often only visible if I’m really looking for it. So, the meal tracking, weigh-ins, and weekly progress photos serve to help me see the reality of my subjective experience. I found myself actually excited to get to Sunday, my “benchmark day”, more and more as the week progressed, and here I finally am.

…I am curious about the outcome…

Life is full of benchmarks and milestones. Celebrating those, big and small, has real value, and amazing potential to lift us up – or “set us straight” about where we are on a given journey. I  sigh contentedly,  sitting in this place, listening to the birds, and the river as it flows by. It’s a beautiful morning and I made it to this goal, this lovely place to sit with my thoughts, in good time. That’s another piece of my fitness journey; overcoming my pain, and mobility issues, to “go further, faster”. I’m pleased to be back to being comfortable with 2.5 miles. I’m eager to reach 3… then 5… I’m counting on practice and incremental change over time. I know this works.

I’m grateful that I’m still walking.

A bit of daylight breaks through the clouds. It’s time to head back down the trail to other moments and beginnings…

I woke groggy and in pain, this morning. Massive headache. Sinus congestion (and assorted other allergy symptoms). Tendonitis in my right knee. Osteo-arthritis pain in my spine. Traveling Partner’s bad mood ringing in my ears, first thing. Fucking hell – what a way to start a new work week, and first day back to the office after a couple very relaxing days away from “everything”. After an hour of snarling to myself discontentedly all the way to the city, I sat down to assess the work that landed on my plate while I was out of the office. My coffee is already gone. My headache most definitely is not.

…Pain sucks…

This morning is every bit as just frankly terrible as the weekend was delightful. Maybe there’s a real relationship between those things, but more likely it’s just a random correlation in the timing, with no meaning outside whatever meaning I choose to force into it. I start working on letting all that shit go. All of it. I start by replying to my Traveling Partner’s messages, catching up on email and taking something for my pain. I make another cup of coffee. I wade through 2 days of Slack pings and bookmark a handful for later action. I make notes about what has to get done today, and what needs my attention this week. I make reminders for myself to tackle some tasks my Traveling Partner asked me to handle for him, today.

…Fuck this headache, though…

I’m starting the day feeling distracted and annoyed. It’s less than ideal, and I would very much like to just have a fucking tantrum, cry, and maybe break some shit… but… that’s literally not who I am, or how I prefer to handle my emotions. It’s just a feeling I’m feeling, right now, and it’ll pass. I take a breathe, and a sip of coffee. My eye lands on my calendar, and I realize I’m “ahead of things”, based on the timing I had allotted to do the basic catching up, this morning. That’s a nice – if small – win. I adjust my calendar details for accuracy (it’s just a thing I do), and I don’t put anything into the time I “got back in my day” based on that change – I’ll just go with it. Feels good. Small wins are still wins, and I pause to enjoy that feeling.

I started the Ozempic yesterday. All the anxiety and rethinking and caution and concern… over… what, exactly? It wasn’t at all difficult to give myself the shot. I haven’t had any kind of side effects (yet). “Nothing to see here.” It still has the power to astonish me how often we create our drama and sorrow out of thin air, or allow ourselves to become freaked out over some momentary bullshit that literally does not actually matter in any substantial way. We’re strange creatures. I breathe, exhale, and relax, feeling the pain in my body and trying to let even that just go. My results vary, but making the attempt feels worthwhile, and at least somewhat effective… maybe?

I sit with my irritable mood and my coffee, managing to be annoyed that I “missed the sunrise”, being distracted by work things as soon as I arrived in the office. It’s not worth being annoyed about, but I prefer it over being annoyed with my Traveling Partner, who managed to genuinely vex me this morning, just being human himself. Working toward also letting that go, I find myself annoyed by other things too small to actually care about, which is… fucking stupid, but very human. I quietly remind myself not to let the moment color the day, which seems practical and wise – I hope I can take my own advice. lol

I continue to drink my coffee, plan my day, and fuss to myself quietly over the amount of pain I am in this morning. I’m unlikely to bitch about it openly in my interactions with other people – which serves to remind me how little we can know about what someone else is actually going through. The result is that I find myself looking at my Traveling Partner’s early morning shitty mood with fond compassion and empathy, instead of just being irritated with him for being irritable, himself. No, I didn’t need that shit this morning, at all, but it’s not as if he’s dishing that shit out “on purpose” with an intention of causing me to also have a shitty morning; he’s having his own experience. I feel for him. He woke too early, when I got up to pee in the wee hours, and couldn’t get back to sleep. That sucks. I get being irritable as a result. I sigh to myself, and drink more coffee. My ears are ringing and my head hurts, but it’s not a reason to be a dick to people. I can do better… I just need more practice.

I finish my coffee, and open up my checklist of shit to get done today… it’s time to begin again.

I woke more or less “on time” this morning, a few minutes ahead of my planned time. I got up, quietly went through my morning routine and headed out… well… after I remembered my lunch and stepped back from the front door to grab that. Then, also remembered my “computer glasses”, and went back for those. It’s been that sort of morning, so far.

The morning sunrise is painted across dark gray clouds on the horizon, streaks of bold pink, magenta, and orange contrast sharply with the gray of the clouds. The sky above is hinting at the bright blue of the day to come. I sip my morning coffee and think about my anxiety. I woke with it, although I hadn’t yet recognized my “companion” quite yet. The awareness hit me in the car, as I turned a corner and felt it surge as if from nowhere. My thoughts were quite suddenly filled with scenarios of doom, disaster, and unmanageable hardship. The feelings (both the physical sensations of anxiety, and the emotional experience) weren’t tied to anything real in my environment in the moment. I explored my thoughts gingerly – was I actually this anxious about getting the taxes done? That seemed unlikely; it’s never really stressed me out, ever, and has always been a rather routine bit of tedium that just happens to have a deadline. Could I be anxious about taking a couple days away, for myself? I mean, maybe, sure, but… this kind of anxiety, over that? I take a mental inventory of possible stressors and as I consider each, it’s clear that that isn’t “the thing”… so what is?

As I drove, poking at my anxiety mentally, I let my thoughts carry me back to the very first clear recollection I have of feeling “anxious”… I was, as I recall now, about 8? Maybe 9? (Honestly, I’ve very few memories earlier than 10 or so, so I could be way off here.) I had come downstairs to tell my parents I “didn’t feel well” and described the feeling in the pit of my stomach, the sense of pressure around my chest, the difficulty breathing, the feelings of… panic and dread. I didn’t understand why I was feeling this way. My father rather sternly asked me what I had “done wrong”, and flatly asserted that it sounded like I felt guilty about something. I immediately learned to associate anxiety with guilt, and to question my actions, thoughts, and sense of right and wrong, any time I felt this combination of feelings and sensations. It’s rather a shame my parents didn’t simply teach me about anxiety and how to manage it at that time, but it’s quite possible they did not know, themselves. It’s generally best to use the correct tool for a purpose. Conflating anxiety with guilt created considerable difficulty for me with regard to managing my anxiety later in life; I spent a lot of wasted time trying to figure out what I had “done wrong” that would cause me to feel such panic and uncontrollable dread. It became progressively more commonplace and intense over time, and more so still when my PTSD worsened.

I sighed quietly to myself, as my thoughts played out with the morning commute. One of the most profound changes I made later in life was simply to learn to recognize my anxiety for what it is, and to uncouple it from any requirement or expectation that it must be “because of…” something. It often isn’t “because of” anything at all; it’s a biochemical experience that can be triggered (rather easily) by an unfortunate number of sometimes completely unrelated (and under other circumstances, untroubling) experiences. Sure, it seems helpful generally to have some sense of “why” something feels the way it does, but insisting on certainty with regard to “why” can seriously fuck with how quickly anxiety can be resolved – at least in my own experience, this has proven to be the case. So. I allow room for the uncertainty, and acceptance that the experience of anxiety is, quite often, it’s own thing – and nothing more.

I’ve got a doctor’s appointment later today. We’ll be talking about weight management, my blood sugar, my blood pressure, my anxiety, my fitness… and… we’ll be talking about Ozempic. The recollection that I do have this appointment immediately sets off my anxiety on an entirely other order of magnitude. Fuck – is that it? I’m stressed about the appointment? Okay. Well. It’s just a fucking doctor’s appointment. But… now I get what’s got my anxiety going; my deep inner fear that “nothing is actually going to help” where my weight is concerned, combined with the steady drumbeat of concern about the costs of medical care (and the high price of prescription medications)(definitely real world worries in the US). I most definitely do not want to “get stuck on” an Rx that’s going to cost me $1k a month for the rest of my life! (What if for some reason I lose my good healthcare through employment!) Holy shit, yep, that’s it. That’s “the thing”, at least this morning… so… Okay, sometimes there is “a thing”. lol

I breathe. Exhale. Relax. I take a minute to acknowledge that these are legitimate concerns. I make room for the awareness that addressing chronic long-term wellness concerns – particularly those that are holding me back from making more profound gains in good health – really do matter. (I’d like to be around to enjoy my Traveling Partner and my pleasant life for a good long time to come.) I’ve got a good doctor, these days, and she’s not going to make recommendations that could put my health at risk (and fears about that are “old baggage”). I feel my anxiety begin to dissipate as I provide myself a moment of my own time and attention, allowing myself to “feel heard” about the things that make me feel potentially reluctant to “try something new/different”. The panic recedes and begins to fade into the background. The anxiety slowly fades. There’s no “disaster” looming, here, it’s just some nerves about taking a medication I’ve no experience with – which does reliably make me a tad uncomfortable, every time it comes up.

…Now, the morning feels pleasant and promising and filled with potential. Yes, I’ve still got the taxes to wrap up, and my Spring allergies are still flaring up (with trees in bloom all around), and I’m just days away from taking a couple days for downtime on the coast (which means getting through the week’s workload in just 3 days)(why does excitement have to feel so similar to anxiety? what a cruel prank) … but… isn’t that all pretty routine basic adulting stuff? “Nothing to see here.” I sip my coffee, feeling more at ease and comfortable with myself, and the day ahead. No, I don’t know where this path leads, and the future is unwritten… but I’m here, now, and I can begin again.

…I take a moment for the sunrise, watching the colors slowly fade as the dawn becomes day. I sip my coffee, and stretch. I breathe. Take a few minutes for meditation. I reflect on the wonderful weekend I shared with my Traveling Partner, and the satisfaction I felt planting 4 new roses in the garden, and seeing seedlings sprouting on my windowsill for the next plants that will go into the veggie bed (bush beans, Bok choy, melons, and sweet peppers) when the weather is just a bit warmer. I reflect on the frustration (and fun) of trying a new video game for the first time, and the challenge of learning the new interface – difficult for me, but really healthy and worthwhile to do so. It was a splendid weekend.

I sip my coffee and yawn. I catch myself fussing with my fingertips, moments aware from tearing at my cuticles – but I stop myself and reach for some hand lotion instead. It’s likely to be an entire day of new beginnings, do-overs, restarts, and opportunities to begin again. I guess it’s time to get going on that. 😀

Another new day, and I’m feeling good about it. It’s a Friday, my calendar is pretty light, and it’s payday – all practical details that are a suitable foundation to a pleasant morning. It’s early, not yet daybreak. The office is very quiet, and I’m working with the lights out, letting me see the nuances of the sunrise, when it comes. I’m sipping my coffee and thinking of moments, and of people. I’ve got a song stuck in my head, which I woke with. It’s one that my Traveling Partner plays for me, and hearing it fills me with warm affection and a sense of romantic connection. My inbox is full of email from friends, replies to recent emails I sent to them. I’m eager to take time to reply to each one, but that moment is not now.

…Nice start to the day…

I sip my coffee, and consider the day, the moment, the upcoming weekend, the things that matter most to me, and dear friends (most of whom are quite far away, these days, others who are nearer… well… we all behave as though we’re far away, anyway, welcome to the 21st century).

I drove into the city wrapped in a soft misty rain. I smile thinking about it; it’s the sort of rain a garden full of tender sprouts and seedlings really loves. The thought carries me to my garden, and I think about the rose that has arrived, and is ready to plant, and I think about which seeds can now be sown (is it time to plant beans?) and reminding myself to get out there and weed the flower beds before the friend who cuts my lawn undertakes the task (being helpful) – he isn’t reliably good at telling the seedlings of young flowers from the seedlings of weeds (me either, sometimes, but I do know where I’ve put seeds). I grin at my eagerness to do this bit of manual labor; as a kid at home, it was one of my absolute least preferred chores to find assigned to me on a weekend day! Funny how we grow to embrace some of the things we hated growing up. Time in the garden as a kid was just a lot of unpleasant toiling with no value to me personally (that I could understand at the time). Now, time in my garden is my time, well-spent, appreciated, and thoroughly enjoyed – and not in spite of the work involved, but often because of it. My garden, my time, reflecting my thinking and choices, and done with love to be shared with my Traveling Partner (who isn’t so into it, but loves it along with me, because I love it so much).

…My thoughts about the garden carry me back to my thoughts about love, and friendship, and the moments we choose to share with those dear to us. I put the song that’s stuck in my head at the top of my playlist and hit “play”; it’s time to begin again.

My head aches ferociously this morning, some annoying combination headache that grips the base of my skull and holds on, dull and distracting. My tinnitus is loud, and also very annoying. Ah, but this cup of coffee is hot, and properly made, and soothes the part of my brain that very much wishes I were not awake right now at all. A new day begins, and so far… it’s mostly annoying. lol Yes, I’m also mostly laughing it off – because honestly what the hell else can I do with it that might get me somewhere better than this situation right here, right now? I’m just saying, I could choose to be angry about it and mired in my aggravation, but I’m doing my best to not do that.

I was awakened too early; my Traveling Partner was having trouble sleeping because he was congested and having trouble breathing easily, which is most definitely a crappy experience to be having. I woke from a deep sound sleep, cross and alarmed, and concerned that I’d likely not be easily able to get back to sleep (and might also be at risk of escalating the situation into some sort of argument) because of where my head was at when I woke. I chose to get up, dress, and head into the city (so so early) – I knew I could nap on the couch in the lounge for a couple hours before my day typically begins (there wouldn’t be anyone there to be disturbed or inconvenienced). The drive into the city was pleasant, uneventful, and calm; there was no traffic, and I only saw a couple cars passing in the other direction on the entire drive. Once I arrived, I had no difficulty getting more or less comfortable (for most values of “comfortable”) on the couch, and I managed to nap for a couple hours, although the city version of “quiet” is rather noisy for my liking.

I sip my coffee and recognize that some portion of my headache may be the result of the less-than-ideal pillow I was resting my head on, or the position I was in, generally. Still… I did rest, and it is a new day…anyway, I think I had this headache when I woke up earlier. Today I have my appointment with my massage therapist, and that will likely give me considerable relief from this headache.

…Pretty good cup of coffee, too…

Fairly typical of cities, this one seems “flooded with light”, even during the wee empty hours of the night. When I woke, this space seemed “brightly lit”, although there were no lights on. It was just the ambient light of the city itself, and my eyes had adjusted while I dozed. I woke somewhat disoriented (so I know I definitely slept, possibly fairly deeply), confused by the illuminated surroundings, which clashed with my expectation of darkness. Finding my way to the coffee machine in the “darkness” was easy, and the hot cup of coffee was so welcome.

…So here it is a new day…

I sigh and stretch, and rub my aching neck, and sip my coffee. I wonder if my Traveling Partner finally got back to sleep, himself? I hope he did. Being short on sleep sucks.

My mind wanders. I drink my coffee. The pre-dawn sky is still quite dark, and daybreak is still minutes away, and it’ll be more than half an hour after that before the sun rise. For now, I can’t even see whether the sky is cloudy – those details are still obscured by the city lights. Still, it’s interesting enough to simply watch the cars go by on the streets below, and listen to the crows announcing their plans for the morning, while I drink this coffee.

Day breaks, and the crows take flight as a noisy group. Soon enough it’ll be time for coffee #2… and time to begin again.

…Fucking hell, this headache, though…
